MSU Extension Master Floral Designer Program
- 14 Weeks
Overview
Do you like to design with flowers and greenery for your home, place of work, or friends and family? If so, consider enrollment in the MSU Extension Master Floral Designer (MFD) certificate program. MFDs learn all the basics of fresh floral design and importantly, what makes a design beautiful.
The course (Phase I) consists of 14 peer-reviewed units written and delivered by Dr. James DelPrince, AIFD, PFCI, AAF, Horticulture Specialist with Mississippi State University Extension. It is recommended for consumer-level floral design enthusiasts. After completion, students are eligible for move upward to Phases II and III.
Phase I is a semester-long (14 week) online course. Each week, a new series of educational videos open within the online course platform. Topics include floral care and handling, understanding design principles and their interaction in floral arrangement, design elements including in-depth information about color and all other elements. Each unit contains practical applications on creating floral designs such as centerpieces, buffet design, altar arrangements, and seasonal compositions. Fun exercises allow you to learn more about the cut flowers, cut foliage, and dried/preserved materials used in floral design. The course is complimented by a high-quality textbook included in the fee. Over 52 hours of video content is included in Phase I, divided over 50 videos professionally produced and edited by MSU Agricultural Communications and the MSU Television Center.
Phase II is a hands-on, in-person, four-day workshop held at our floral design studio located in Biloxi, Mississippi on the Gulf Coast. Learning is enhanced when accomplished in person with Dr. DelPrince and a small group of likeminded learners. Participants must complete Phase I prior to this hands-on segment. Phase II sessions are scheduled throughout the year and can be found here: https://reg.extension.msstate.edu/view/cal10a.aspx?ek=&ref=&aa=&sid1=&si...
Phase III involves non-profit volunteering that promotes floral design. This phase is offered for participants who wish to achieve a certificate but is not required. Learn more here: <https://extension.msstate.edu/content/master-floral-designers>
