Featured Students: Joby and Thierry Czarnecki
This month's Featured Students are Joby and Thierry Czarnecki, a couple that have special reason to enjoy the Center for Continuing Education's Personal Enrichment classes.
"When I took knitting, there were a handful of ladies in the class. I didn’t know it at the time, but one of the ladies would become a lifelong friend. She actually knew my husband before I did. She and her husband were close friends of Thierry’s, and she is a major factor in how we started dating" writes Joby Czarnecki.
Joby has taken wine appreciation with her husband 3 times, but has also taken knitting and calligraphy in the past. She's planning on taking guitar and photography this fall, "...since I couldn't decide between them."
Joby chose her classes because of a desire to learn about the subject matter. "We all have these thoughts like, 'oh, I wish I could do that (insert skill here)' and I just decided to stop wishing and do it!" I own both a guitar and a digital SLR camera. I know I’m not getting the full use from them, so I’m excited to take these courses to learn more about them."
The idea for taking Wine Appreciation was suggested to them by a local buisness owner. "We already knew quite a bit about wine, but decided to take the course anyway. It has become a fun, Friday night “date night” activity for us in the spring. We’ve taken it three times now, and every year we learn new things, try new wines, and meet fun new people."
Personal Enrichment classes are a way for anyone to enjoy exploring a new hobby or skill in a fun, creative atmosphere. The fall semester offers over 20 different classes to choose from, and students are encouraged to submit ideas and suggestions for future classes. Joby has a few ideas for what she'd like to see out of the program, as well. "I’m hoping someday to try my hand at pottery, which I haven’t seen offered recently. I also want to take floral arranging. And one of these days when I am positive I won’t eat all my homework, I’ll take cake decorating. The problem is usually there are just too many classes I want to take and not enough nights in the week."
There are additional benefits to taking the classes in town: Joby says the face-to-face experience means you get to share with other people new to what you're taking, which helps the student feel 'less alone'.
The Czarneckis are enthusiastic about recommending the classes. " I have enjoyed every class I have taken and I have never felt like I wasted my money on any of the courses. A lot of people feel stuck in a rut of work, sleep, work. Learning something new is a great way to break the cycle and it’s also something you’ll carry with you... It’s only a couple nights of your life, but it might turn into something you can enjoy for the rest of your life, so why wouldn’t you give it a try?"
Mr. Czarnecki agreed, "It has been a great experience, meeting new friends and learning while having fun!"
