Featured Instructor: Daphne McKibben
Daphne McKibben has been decorating cakes for years. She says she got her start making birthday cakes for her own children, but her first wedding cake was made for a family member's anniversary. They had had no cake available, but wanted to celebrate, so McKibben talked to a chef friend of hers and got to work.
"I've done quite a few weddings now, including the ones for all my children."
She enjoys all the parts of putting a cake together, but her favorite part is unveiling the finished cake at a wedding. Although it can be quite a big undertaking, seeing the bride's reaction makes all the work worth it.
Teaching is a relitively new experience, but so far it's one she enjoys: "Meeting new people is always fun. I was a stay at home mom and homeschooled my kids K-12, so meeting new people didn't happen much! But the most exciting thing about teaching is that moment when they finally learn something they thought they couldn't do, it's very fulfilling."
This semester, McKibben is teaching both Beginner and Advanced Cake Decorating, along with two Cookie Decorating and two Sewing With a Project classes.
McKibben has valuable advice for new students: "Don't be intimitaed by new things. You have to start with small, little steps. Don't think you can't do it, by the end of the class they [the students] are making great cakes!"
